School Readiness
School readiness is less about knowing letters and numbers and more about the skills that let a child access learning and the classroom.
What “ready for school” really means
- Understanding and using language to follow instructions, ask for help and join in
- Fine motor skills for holding a pencil, using scissors and managing a lunchbox
- Attention and sitting for a group activity; coping with transitions
- Emotional regulation — handling frustration, separation and a busy room
- Independence with toileting, dressing and eating
- Playing and negotiating with other children
How we help
If you or your child’s kindy have concerns, we assess across these areas and pinpoint where support would make the biggest difference. Sessions are playful and practical — the skills are built through games, routines and real tasks rather than worksheets. We also share simple things to do at home and, with consent, brief the school so day one goes smoothly.
Timing
The year before school is a good window, but even a term or two of targeted work can help. If a delay is significant, we can also talk through whether an extra year before school is worth considering.
Common Questions
Still not sure? Call the clinic on 0493 719 759 and we'll talk it through.
My child is bright but immature — is that a concern?
Often the “readiness” skills that lag are regulation, independence and fine motor rather than academics. Those are very workable, and worth addressing so a capable child is not held back by them.
Do you do the assessment at kindy?
We can — seeing your child in their early learning centre gives a truer picture of how they manage a group setting.
