Home Modifications
An occupational therapist assesses the home for safety and access, and recommends minor or complex modifications.
What is assessed
- Getting in and out — steps, thresholds, paths, ramps and rails
- Bathrooms — showering, toileting and transfers
- Kitchen and laundry access, and everyday movement between rooms
- Lighting, flooring and trip hazards
- How the space fits the person’s goals, equipment and support workers
Minor vs. complex modifications
Minor modifications (grab rails, a hand-held shower, a threshold ramp) are lower cost and quicker to approve. Complex modifications (structural bathroom changes, ramps, door widening) need more detailed assessment, drawings and quotes, and often a builder and second OT opinion. We scope which applies early.
The report and what happens next
You receive a report with the recommended modifications, the reasoning, and the evidence a funder needs. We can liaise with builders and occupational therapy assessors through the design and sign-off stages.
Common Questions
Still not sure? Call the clinic on 0493 719 759 and we'll talk it through.
Will NDIS or My Aged Care pay for modifications?
Home modifications are funded from NDIS Capital budgets where they meet the reasonable-and-necessary test, and can be supported through a Home Care Package. The assessment provides the justification; approval rests with the funder.
Do you do the building work?
No — we assess and recommend. You engage a builder, and we can review the work against the recommendations.
