Assistive Technology
Assessment, trial and recommendation of equipment that helps a person do everyday activities more safely and independently.
What assistive technology covers
Assistive technology is any device or system that helps someone do something they otherwise could not, or could not do safely. It ranges from low-cost, everyday items through to prescribed, funded equipment.
- Daily living — shower chairs, dressing aids, adapted cutlery
- Mobility and transfers — walkers, wheelchairs, hoists, transfer boards
- Communication — from picture systems to speech-generating devices
- Seasonal and positioning equipment — specialised seating, beds
How the assessment works
We start from the task that is hard, not the product. The therapist identifies what is getting in the way, trials options where possible (including loan equipment), and considers cost, the person’s environment and who else will use it. For higher-cost items an AT assessment report is written to the funder’s template.
Getting it funded
Low-cost AT is often something you can buy directly. Mid- and high-cost AT usually needs an OT assessment and quotes before an NDIS or aged-care funder will approve it. We prepare that evidence and can support any trial period.
Common Questions
Still not sure? Call the clinic on 0493 719 759 and we'll talk it through.
Can we trial equipment before committing?
Wherever possible, yes — through supplier loans or trial pools. A short trial in your own environment is the best way to know something will work.
How long does an AT report take?
Simple recommendations can be quick; complex or custom equipment involves trials, supplier quotes and a detailed report, so allow a few weeks.
