Functional Capacity Assessment
A functional capacity assessment (FCA) describes what a person can do day to day, where they need support, and what would help — written for NDIS planning and reviews.
What an FCA looks at
An occupational therapist gathers information across the areas the NDIS considers, including:
- Self-care — showering, dressing, eating, medication
- Mobility and getting around home and community
- Communication and social interaction
- Learning, attention and problem solving
- Self-management, routines and safety
- Current supports and what is and is not working
How it runs
The assessment usually combines an interview, standardised tools and observation of everyday tasks, at our clinic or in the person’s home. We may also seek input, with consent, from family, support workers or other treating professionals.
The report
You receive a written report setting out current function, barriers, goals and recommended supports, formatted for an NDIS planning meeting or plan review. We can attend the planning meeting where that is useful.
Common Questions
Still not sure? Call the clinic on 0493 719 759 and we'll talk it through.
How long does an FCA take?
Plan for one to two appointments of around 90 minutes, plus report writing. Timeframes vary with complexity and how much collateral information is needed.
Who can request one?
The participant, a family member, a support coordinator or a plan manager can book. A referral is not required but any existing reports are helpful.
